Tiga Penari Bersolek

In Tiga Penari Bersolek (Three Dancers Adorning Themselves), Abdul Aziz turns to the quiet intimacy that precedes the performance. Three young Balinese dancers lean together over a gilded crown, absorbed in the last tender preparations before they take the stage. The central figure, her gaze lowered and her expression serene, steadies the composition, while her companions, shown in profile, bend toward her in gentle concentration.

Aziz renders the scene with a confident, painterly touch. Thick, buttery strokes of ochre, cream and soft gold form a luminous backdrop that lets the dancers' ceremonial attire shine: embroidered bodices in crimson and saffron, emerald sleeves patterned with golden lozenges, and headdresses crowned with white blossoms. Small touches of vermilion on the cheeks and the scattered flowers below echo one another across the canvas.

Here, the artist is less interested in spectacle than in the ritual of beauty itself, a moment of shared devotion and friendship. Presented in its original, intricately carved wooden frame, the work captures the grace and warmth that distinguish Aziz's celebrated depictions of Balinese life.
