In Lotus Flowers (1981), Affandi transforms a familiar botanical subject into a vivid expression of movement, colour and emotion. Rather than rendering the flowers through precise botanical detail, he approaches the lotus pond as a living, shifting environment, where blossoms, foliage and reflections merge into an animated field of painterly gestures.

The composition unfolds through vigorous, swirling strokes of green, yellow and deep black, punctuated by vivid crimson-red lotus blossoms. These flashes of red emerge almost spontaneously from the dense vegetation, creating a striking visual rhythm against the surrounding layers of colour. Applied with characteristic physical intensity, the paint carries the immediacy of the artist's gestures, allowing the energy of the natural world to resonate through the very surface of the canvas.

For Affandi, painting was less an exercise in faithful representation than an act of emotional expression. His distinctive gestural technique, often working directly with paint squeezed from the tube and manipulated by hand, gave his subjects an extraordinary sense of vitality. In Lotus Flowers, nature is neither still nor merely decorative; it becomes an extension of the artist's own expressive temperament. The result is an exuberant interpretation of the lotus pond, where the beauty of nature is captured not through meticulous description, but through an unmistakable force of feeling.
